The North Carolina Adoption Process

There North Carolina adoption process is lengthy, but it might be concisely summarized as doing the following…

  • Work with an accredited agency and follow its procedures. The agency will typically have parents go through orientation and complete coursework. The latter may be optional, depending on the agency.
  • Go through a home study. This is where a representative from the agency comes to the home of the prospective parents and evaluates its suitability for children. Presuming approval, parents are then designated as “qualified to adopt.”
  • The prospective parents can then start meeting with children who are available to be adopted, or with expectant mothers who are seeking to have their baby adopted.
  • When a decision is made, the final steps have to be completed, including both paperwork and a court appearance to have the adoption officially ratified. The adoption decree is issued, and the child and parents are now a family.

On paper, it looks simple enough. But the documentation alone will be extensive, and a good lawyer can guide couples through it. Furthermore, challenges often arise along the way.

Common Challenges in Adoption

Every case is different, but a common challenge that all couples face is going through the home visit by the agency. It’s not easy to have a stranger come to one’s home and have them assess something as deeply personal as the suitability to be a parent. We work with clients, so they know what to expect and how to handle issues and questions that are likely to arise during the home study.

There’s also the matter of ensuring that the adoption paperwork is airtight. This is particularly true when adopting from an expectant mother. Biological mothers have rights and proper procedure must be followed to ensure there aren’t misunderstandings—particularly in cases like these, where misunderstands can be personally devastating.
